The Burton Charitable Foundation is a small family-based charitable foundation, in operation since 1960, now working on its fifth generation of Burtons to continue the tradition of giving back to our communities, our country and our planet. Our members donate to more than 100 different registered Canadian charities every year across a full range of causes from social welfare to the arts to medical care to environmental efforts. In addition, the foundation considers every year small-scale support of organizations nominated by our members.
We care about helping those less fortunate than ourselves.
We care about environmental health.
We care about the people and organizations that provide medical and related support to those in need of it.
We care about the things that touch our lives and our communities.
We support charitable organizations that live these values in Canada and around the world.
Our foundation is run entirely by volunteers drawn from our family. We have no staff. Our 2022 slate of Directors are:
Chris Longair – President
Connor MacDonald - Vice President
Stephanie Smith – Secretary-Treasurer
Kelly Clarke - Director
Terri Burton - Director

Christopher is a public service administrator and a member of the Board since 2016. He has a background in writing and served as a project manager, then creative director in the video game industry prior to his current career. Chris created and championed the BCF Rejuvenation Project to the Board and has been an active participant in the Foundation and mutual aid societies in North America. Chris has been a BCF member since 2002.
Connor is an alumnus of Cape Breton University’s Electrical Engineering and Instrumentation course with a knack for computer science and creative technical solutions. He is self-taught in circuitry soldering and 3D CAD modelling, and has been regarded by educators and employers as an experienced tutor and intermediary. When he wasn’t the top of his class, he was often the individual the best-in-class consulted when stumped.
Stephanie has two business degrees and over 40 years of professional management experience, including 22 years as a contract executive specializing in leading and restructuring not for profit organizations. She is the co-author of several policy books for finance, governance and not-for-profit management. Stephanie has been a member of the BCF since 1981 and was invited to join the Board in 2019.
"When it comes to charitable giving, my preference is to give to less-popular and less well-known charities that I feel will be most helped by my contribution. I also like to give directly to non-registered causes that fall between the cracks – these are usually individuals or small groups that need help getting groceries, paying rent and utilities, or buying clothes for their children. I feel very strongly that everyone has the right to shelter, food, clothing, and health care – so I try to bridge those gaps when someone is struggling.”
“My donations have typically been to my colleagues and friends during times of need. It’s my firm belief that those with wealth have a responsibility to society to watch over those in more dire straits, especially in the unprecedented mid/post pandemic economic predicament that so many of us have found ourselves caught in. Even a modest donation can go quite a way with the right budget and a little creative problem solving.”
“I tend to give to organizations that help people or the environment, whether here in Canada or abroad, staying away from those causes with doe-eyed children or animals, because those causes get a lot of sympathetic support from so many people.”
Kelly (Burton) Clarke has a long history of charitable giving which aligns with C. L. Burton’s philosophies which have stood the test of time. Kelly has a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Biology from Laurentian University and has been a Superintendent of Toronto Paramedic Services for over 16 years. Kelly has been involved with various organizations contributing time and resources to the Run for the Cure, Special Olympics Ontario and has donated blood 54 times (and counting!) Kelly had the privilege of accompanying the Prime Minister and Major General Rohmer to the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Kelly supported the veterans on this major event and was the French interpreter for the group.
Terri Burton has been a proud member of the Burton Family for 43 years. Alignment with C. L. Burton’s history of compassion for others has always resonated with her. Terri is a Registered Nurse, former Critical Care Flight Paramedic, EMS Chief (retired) and is currently a Professor of Nursing at Georgian College. Terri has been an instructor with the Heart and Stroke Foundation for many years and has spent time volunteering her time to teach free community CPR courses and placing Automated External Defibrillators throughout the District of Muskoka. Health of our Ontarian’s has been a priority for Terri as she volunteers for community immunization events including flu clinics and Covid-19 vaccines.
"I am a continuous supporter of veterans, cancer and hospice care. I like to contribute my time and resources to causes which help improve the lives of those who fought so bravely so that I can enjoy the privileges of living in an amazing country like Canada."
"I have been a long time supporter of seniors and programs that support community care for those at risk."
