The Burton Charitable Foundation is a small family-based charitable foundation, in operation since 1960, now working on its fifth generation of Burtons to continue the tradition of giving back to our communities, our country and our planet. Our members donate to more than 100 different registered Canadian charities every year across a full range of causes from social welfare to the arts to medical care to environmental efforts. In addition, the foundation considers every year small-scale support of organizations nominated by our members.
We care about helping those less fortunate than ourselves.
We care about environmental health.
We care about the people and organizations that provide medical and related support to those in need of it.
We care about the things that touch our lives and our communities.
We support charitable organizations that live these values in Canada and around the world.
Our foundation is run entirely by volunteers drawn from our family. We have no staff. Our 2022 slate of Directors are:
Chris Longair – President
Greg Burton - Vice President
Stephanie Smith – Secretary-Treasurer
Kelly Clarke - Director
Hugh Kendall – Past President
Connor MacDonald - Director

Christopher is a public service administrator and a member of the Board since 2016. Chris created and championed the BCF Rejuvenation Project to the Board and has been an active participant in the Foundation and mutual aid societies in North America. Chris has been a BCF member since 2002.
Greg is a veteran of both the British and Canadian Armies. A 40-year career infantry officer, Greg has dared to adventure across Canada, including the Arctic, and in the United States, England, Northern Ireland, Germany, Cyprus, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Afghanistan. Retiring as the Army’s senior technical staff officer, he joined defence manufacturing company DEW Engineering in Ottawa. As Senior Director Strategic Business Development, he develops long-term business prospects through exports to Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. Greg is an Armiger, and is the self-proclaimed Burton family historian. He is married with three children and four grandchildren.
Stephanie has two business degrees and over 40 years of professional management experience, including 22 years as a contract executive specializing in leading and restructuring not for profit organizations. She is the co-author of several policy books for finance, governance and not-for-profit management. Stephanie has been a member of the BCF since 1981 and was invited to join the Board in 2019.
"When it comes to charitable giving, my preference is to give to less-popular and less well-known charities that I feel will be most helped by my contribution. I also like to give directly to non-registered causes that fall between the cracks – these are usually individuals or small groups that need help getting groceries, paying rent and utilities, or buying clothes for their children. I feel very strongly that everyone has the right to shelter, food, clothing, and health care – so I try to bridge those gaps when someone is struggling.”
“I have tended to give to museums and archives that preserve our history for the education of those who will come after us. My hope is that our children will learn from the past, to both appreciate the inventiveness of our forebears, and so they do not repeat their mistakes. I also support organizations that assist veterans and their families, who sacrifice so much during their service in order that their fellow citizens can enjoy peaceful, prosperous lives.”
“I tend to give to organizations that help people or the environment, whether here in Canada or abroad, staying away from those causes with doe-eyed children or animals, because those causes get a lot of sympathetic support from so many people.”
Kelly (Burton) Clarke has a long history of charitable giving which aligns with C. L. Burton’s philosophies which have stood the test of time. Kelly has a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Biology from Laurentian University and has been a Superintendent of Toronto Paramedic Services for over 16 years. Kelly has been involved with various organizations contributing time and resources to the Run for the Cure, Special Olympics Ontario and has donated blood 54 times (and counting!) Kelly had the privilege of accompanying the Prime Minister and Major General Rohmer to the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Kelly supported the veterans on this major event and was the French interpreter for the group.
Dr. Hugh Kendall is a General Surgeon trained at McGill and University of Toronto, and practising in the GTA for over 25 years. He has extensive experience in Quality Management of health care at a Provincial level. He is past Chair of the Quality Assurance Committee, and of the Premises Inspection Committee at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. He is currently appointed at Ontario Health as Regional Lead for GI endoscopy and Colorectal Cancer Screening, and is President and Medical Director of Durham EndoSurgery Centre. He is married with 2 children.
Connor is an alumnus of Cape Breton University’s Electrical Engineering and Instrumentation course with a knack for computer science and creative technical solutions. He is self-taught in circuitry soldering and 3D CAD modelling, and has been regarded by educators and employers as an experienced tutor and intermediary. When he wasn’t the top of his class, he was often the individual the best-in-class consulted when stumped.
"I am a continuous supporter of veterans, cancer and hospice care. I like to contribute my time and resources to causes which help improve the lives of those who fought so bravely so that I can enjoy the privileges of living in an amazing country like Canada."
"I prefer gifts to remain anonymous, or at least not publicized. To do otherwise is to suggest a quid pro quo, and is antithetical to the idea of a 'gift'."
“My donations have typically been to my colleagues and friends during times of need. It’s my firm belief that those with wealth have a responsibility to society to watch over those in more dire straits, especially in the unprecedented mid/post pandemic economic predicament that so many of us have found ourselves caught in. Even a modest donation can go quite a way with the right budget and a little creative problem solving.”
