Thinking about joining?

Who can be a Member?

The Burton Charitable Foundation has always been a family-based foundation dedicated to the idea that philanthropy is a good thing. The Burton family has a strong tradition of giving byword, deed and donation to worthy causes.

Membership in the foundation is available to all descendants of Charles Luther Burton, their partners and children, including all varieties of life partners, adoptive children and children of a life partner from a previous marriage. Individuals who qualify must apply to the Board of Directors for approval of their membership and within 3 months of obtaining approval, make a donation to a registered Canadian charity through the Foundation.

To maintain their membership, members must make annual donations through the Foundation of $1 or more to a registered Canadian charity of their choice or to the Foundation itself.

A person’s status as a member terminates automatically on January 1st of the year following the calendar year in which the member does not pay their membership fees. Membership also terminates when a member dies or resigns in writing. The Board of Directors may terminate the membership of an individual member upon criminal conviction or behaviour which may threaten the reputation or status of the Foundation; such termination may only be effected by unanimous vote and the member must be informed electronically or in writing within 15 days of such decision.

A foundation has investments that generate income to support charities its members wish to support And a charitable foundation uses its income to support charities its members wish to support. Whether you live in Toronto, Cape Breton, or Frankfurt, if you’re a Burton family member, you can participate in and keep up with your extended family’s philanthropic activities through the website and our periodic communications. One of our goals is to reach out to the next generation of Burton Family members. We want our kids and grandchildren to know where they came from.

What’s in it for me?

Membership in the BCF means:

  1. Being part of a family that gives;
  2. Being part of a network of capable and interesting people … who happen to be related to you;
  3. Giving with a single electronic donation – any registered Canadian charity is eligible;
  4. Getting the chance, from time to time, to nominate a Canadian charity for a donation from the surplus funds of the foundation;
  5. Learning more about your extended family through the web-site and other communications;
  6. Being able to highlight a worthy charity to your fellow members for their consideration in making their own donations; and
  7. You have a say in what the foundation does.
